Style the hallway: the first impression that sells the whole home

The hallway is the first thing a buyer meets — and the room most often forgotten in the listing. How to style a hallway and entrance for the photos and the viewing.

No one buys a home for the hallway's sake — but many rule one out because of it. The entrance sets the tone for everything that follows: a cramped, cluttered hallway whispers "no space" through the rest of the viewing. The good news is that the hallway is the home's cheapest room to lift.

The formula for a selling hallway

  • Clear floor space: shoes away — all but one smart pair
  • Max three garments on the hooks: the hallway should show capacity, not consumption
  • A mirror: doubles the light and the space, and is genuinely practical
  • A seat if there's room — a stool or bench signals thoughtfulness
  • Something alive: a plant or fresh flowers on the shelf

The light — the hallway's weak point

Hallways often lack windows. Compensate with warm, generous lighting and open the doors to adjoining bright rooms when you photograph — the sightline towards the light makes the hallway twice as inviting.

Should the hallway even be in the listing?

Yes — if it looks like something. A styled hallway photo builds trust ("the whole home is cared for") and helps the buyer orient themselves in the layout. An unstyled hallway photo does the opposite. Messy hallway on shoot day? A digital tidy-up clears the floor and the hooks afterwards.
