Some mistakes recur across thousands of listings — and each one costs clicks. Here are the ten most common, in descending order of how often we see them, with the simple fix for each.
1. Leaning walls
The camera was held at an angle. Fix: chest height, level. Most phones have a spirit level in the camera — turn on the grid.
2. Backlight that blows out the windows
The room goes dark, the window white. Shoot with the light to the side, or on a greyer day.
3. Flash
Flash flattens the room and casts hard shadows. Never use flash — raise the ISO or shoot at a brighter time instead.
4. Clutter in the shot
Cables, dishes, laundry baskets. Tidy first — or let a digital tidy-up handle it afterwards.
5. The photographer in the mirror
The classic. Check every mirror and shiny surface before you press the shutter.
6. Extreme wide angle
The room looks like a fishbowl and the buyer is disappointed at the viewing. Stay above 0.6× zoom.
7. Empty, bare rooms
Empty reads as cold and small. Furnish it — physically or digitally in a minute.
8. The wrong first photo
The façade or the hallway as the lead photo wastes the listing's one guaranteed view. Best room first.
9. Too few photos
A room missing from the listing is read as a room with problems. Show everything — even the small room.
10. Over-editing
Neon-blue skies and grubby HDR photos lower trust. True colours, an honest feel — styling should lift reality, not replace it.
